Volunteer Position: Health Equipment Loan Program Volunteer
Number of Volunteers Needed: 3
Volunteer Job Description: Offers mobility, independence and safety to seniors and those recovering from illness or surgery in their own homes. The HELP Client Services Volunteer provides direct support to in-person and telephone inquiries from the public with a primary responsibility to provide loans and accept returns of health equipment.
RESPONSIBILITIES / ACTIVITIES
Responsibility 1. Client Service 60%
Activities:
• Provides professional customer service and information to the public, both by telephone and in person
• Selects appropriate equipment to match health professional referral and completes minor adjustments to ensure appropriate fit for clients
• Ensures all clients receive written instructions for each piece of equipment and responds to client enquiries regarding equipment set-up
• Interacts with health care professionals, as required
• Directs enquiries to appropriate departments, programs or other agencies
• Responds to enquiries regarding equipment returns, repairs and loan extensions and completes related documentation
• Receives and documents equipment returns
• Observes routine precautions in the handling of used equipment including use of required personal protective equipment and hand hygiene
• Assists in responding to equipment recalls by providing information to affected clients.
Responsibility 2. Administrative Duties 30%
Activities:
• Creates and maintains paper and/or computer records regarding clients, loans and returns.
• Places outbound calls regarding overdue equipment
• Completes required tasks to open and close facility at start or end of shift
• Keeps office area tidy and alerts supervisor when maintenance or supplies are required
• Liaises with Equipment Supply staff regarding equipment inventory needs
Responsibility 3. Finance and Donation Processing 10%
Activities:
• Requests and accepts financial and equipment donations in support of Canadian Red Cross programs and services and/or other Red Cross appeals
• Processes donations received by mail or in-person, and issues non-tax receipts
• Participates in disaster planning, preparation and response, as required
• Contributes to a healthy and safe working environment
• Performs other duties, as required
QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Training in office administration and/or one year of work related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position requires a satisfactory Canadian criminal record reference check and a satisfactory vulnerable sector check.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including handling interactions with the general public, clients and colleagues
• Strong verbal and written communications skills in English, including telephone etiquette
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to work as part of an effective team
• Dependable
• Ability to effectively execute assigned tasks in a high pressure environment
• Strong computer skills, with working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, and inventory databases
• Demonstrated ability to listen and empathize with clients concerning their personal and/or health-related issues
• Ability to lift and carry 50lbs
• Current generic WHMIS certification, or willingness to take training
ASSETS
• Experience working with a diverse population
• Fluency in a second language
• General knowledge and understanding of health equipment
• Current Standard First Aid certification, or willingness to take training
